Clancy was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on June 6, 1989. At about 4 months of age, he found a home with a university professor and his wife. When Clancy was 8 years old, his beloved master became terminally ill with cancer and re-homed Clancy with a wonderful woman in West Virginia.
When Clancy was 10 years old, his owner had a premature baby who remained very ill and fragile for a long. She moved with the baby and Clancy into her mother's home to be closer to the hospital. The problem was, her mother's home did not have a fenced yard, forcing Clancy to stay in the garage for most of the day. He could not be in the house with the baby for fear of passing germs on to the baby. So with a broken heart, his owner decided to re-home Clancy once again. She contacted Aussie Rescue & Placement Helpline's West Virginia rep. The catch being, the owner couldn't remember his age and said he was 13. The WV rep posted to the ARPH-list about Clancy.
Many of the seasoned rescue personnel suggested a 13-year-old dog would not adapt to a new home and that it would be kinder to euthanize him. I told the list I would contact the owner about evaluating Clancy, since they lived in the same town as one of my sons. We arranged to meet Clancy on Mother's Day 2001. It was love at first sight. Even with his summer shave-down, he was a beautiful dog--and so full of vitality and personality! He sure didn't act his age!! We adopted Clancy right on the spot and he came home with us.
We have loved having this sweet old geezer entrusted to us. He gets along well with our other three dogs (after some initial working out of alpha order with Shiner, our other male--they decided to split the position. Shiner gets all the toys and Clancy gets to keep everyone in line.). He has helped us with ARPH foster dogs--he calms them down and even allowed a couple of them to use him as a pillow at nap time! We finally found out that Clancy wasn't as old as we thought when his former owner found his ASCA registration form and a baby photo of him and sent them to us in July 2002. So he was not quite 11 when we adopted him! (We also found out that his sire is Brookridge Quincy's Invasion and his dam is Laurelane Abra Charisma--we knew he was from quality lines!) Now Clancy has congestive heart failure and malignant melanoma. We know he will not be with us much longer, but we are grateful that his wonderful personality and temperament have enriched our lives for as long as it has. Kathy Glaes |
