January 13, 2003: Jay came back to Perennial today. He was originally purchased at 9 weeks of age in 1998. The buyers, who checked out with their references and veterinarian, agreed to all the terms of my contract, and expressed plans to train and compete in agility. Early in January 2003, they contacted me and said they are moving and needed to place Jay. Of course, I told them to bring him to me.
He arrived here very overweight (82.5 pounds ~ he should weigh 55-60 pounds). In violation of my contract, which specifies that Perennial puppies are to be kept as household companions, he was kept outside as what the buyer referred to as a "yard dog."
In no time at all, Jay made himself a proper companion dog, enjoying snuggles on the couch, lots of walks, and play play play. Jay and Sheila went through a novice obedience class this spring, and he did great. He loves to go for car rides!
On May 12, 2003, Jay weighed in at a slim and trim 60 pounds, thanks to stingy food servers, lots of exercise, and his "personal trainer" Buzz, the Westie who lives next door! As of April 2004, he's 56 pounds and holding!
By the way ~ Jay is staying at Perennial!

Jay is a very special boy to us (see his story below). He and Sheila began his competition career in ASCA altered conformation classes in September 2003, and is ventured into the ASCA and AKC obedience rings spring 2004. He earned two ASCA novice obedience legs at the ASC of Michigan trials April 3 & 4, and the following week he earned two AKC novice legs at the Steel City shows in Crown Point, Indiana. Three weeks later he finished both titles, with his third ASCA leg earned May 1 at the Hoosier Working Australian Shepherd Club show in Winchester, Indiana, and his third AKC leg at the Fort Wayne Obedience Training Club trial! What a good boy! Jay is now training for open and utility and doing some tracking.
Jay tied for High Scoring Novice B
Obedience Dog, Fort Wayne Obedience Training Club May 2003 - May 2004.
Jay won the President's Award for FWOTC High Scoring Dog in UKC Obedience, May 2004-May 2005.
Jay is certified as a Pet Partner (therapy dog) through the Delta Society, and works with children in the Paws to Read Program of the Allen County Public Library. He's also done a bit of modeling ~ see below! (This is not an endorsement of any product, including electronic fencing.)
