This is the whelping box we designed and have used for all our litters here at Perennial. We provide the plans here at no charge ~ the dimensions can be modified to suit bitches of difference breeds and sizes.
There is no bottom in the box. For each litter, we purchase a remnant of vinyl flooring, and use that as a bottom. The side of the box rest on the fabric bedding (we use flannel sheets or lengths of polar fleece) with incontinence pads (or newspaper) underneath.

Please Note: The box is meant to be built using dimension lumber and requires no angle cuts. Be aware that a "12 inch board" is actually 11 inches wide ~ that's why the measurements on the diagram differ from the dimensions stated on the materials list.
Directions
Cut the 2 boards that are 1"x12"x8' in half to make 4 boards each 1"x12"x4'. You will then have the upright sides of the box.
Cut one of the 2"x4"x8' boards in half to make two boards each 2"x4"x4'. Place each edgewise against a 1"x12"x4' board and nail in place from the other side of the
